Double Masking – the papercrafting way

You may hearing quite a lot about double masking at the moment, but this is a happier papercrafting version.

Double Masking. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

This monochrome ‘thanks’ card is in Daffodil Delight and Basic White.

My first piece of masking was for the strip across the middle of the project to create a blank space for my sentiment.

The next piece of masking was using one of the Plenty of Patterns Decorative Masks and a Blending Brush to create an ombre effect. I chose to go darker in the centre and paler towards the edges.

When my masking was complete, I added the sentiment from the Biggest Wish Stamp Set. If you haven’t got this £16 stamp set, I would definitely recommend it. It’s a must for your collection.

Next, I added some lengths of Baker’s Twine from the Essentials Pack across the edges of my centre strip.

Finally, using a Stampin’ Blend, some Rhinestones were given a Daffodil Delight colouring.

This is a really quick and simple project. It would also be great in lots of different colours and sentiments too.

Plenty of Patterns Decorative Masks

The new Plenty of Patterns Decorative Masks from the Annual Catalogue definitely appeal to my style. I saw the triangles and instantly knew the type of design I wanted to make.

Plenty of Patterns Decorative Masks. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

As I love monochrome projects, Night of Navy and a Blending Brush were the products I reached for. I also used my Stamparatus to hold everything in place.

It was my first time using a Blending Brush and it was so easy. My ombre design took no time at all.

Simply use the brush at the darker end when it has more ink and work to the lighter end. Reload your brush as many times as you like to make it even darker.

Plenty of Patterns Decorative Masks. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

You can use a Sponge Dauber if you prefer, but it was much quicker with the brush. The bristles are really soft and they have a larger surface area too.

Blending Brushes were a new item in the January-June Mini Catalogue and I have to admit I overlooked them to begin with. I’m pleased I have some now.

Using the mask to draw one of the triangle shapes, I cut this out before adding a sentiment from the Artistically Inked Stamp Set.

If you watched my video from yesterday, you’ll know that I love to revisit, reuse and refresh previous projects. This is certainly a design I’ll be reusing lots of times in lots of different colours.

Countdown to Christmas #9

This purple holly for Countdown to Christmas #9 uses non-traditional colours.

Countdown to Christmas #9. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

My colour combination is Highland Heather, Blackberry Bliss and Whisper White. Who says Christmas cards have to be green and red?

It’s my version of a project on Page 21 of the August-December Mini Catalogue.

I’ve used the Sweetest Time Stamp Set and Dies Bundle, the same as the catalogue.

Countdown to Christmas #9. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

A Sponge Brayer and one of the Basic Pattern Decorative Masks create my dotty backgound. I think it looks great agains the circles of the berries.

The Highland Heather holly leaves are then stuck to the dotty background.

One of the Tasteful Labels Dies provides the centre shape for the sentiment.

Crinkle Seam Binding gives the lovely swoosh of ribbon for the sentiment to sit on.

With the sentiment attached with Dimensionals, the berries are finally stuck down to finish the project.

I love how this has turned out. I might make a few more in different colours.

Bright Birthday Card

It was a friend, and fellow Stampin’ Up! fan’s Birthday, so I made this Bright Birthday Card for them.

A Bright Birthday Card. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

It uses the Bright Collection for the colours with Poppy Parade, Mango Melody, Daffodil Delight and Granny Apple Green mixed with Whisper White.

A Decorative Mask and Sponge Daubers create the background with a strip of Poppy Parade Cardstock across the middle.

The sentiment is from the Itty bitty Birthdays Stamp Set and cut out using the Tailored Tag Punch. This is then layered onto another Tailored Tag shape.

A Bright Birthday Card. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

The flowers and leaves use the Pop of Petals Stamp Set and matching Four-Petal Flower Punch. Each flower has a Sponge Daubered centre with Wink of Stella added afterwards.

The Pop of Petals Bundle (Stamp Set & Punch) is only available as a discounted Bundle until 3rd June. After then, they will be available at full price in the new Annual Catalogue.

Make sure you get yours at the discounted rate before the price increases.

Birthday Blues

It’s not really Birthday Blues, it’s a Birthday card for my Sister-in-Law in shades of blue.

Birthday Blues. Project designed by Karen Young at HIPPOFROG Designs

This is a project with no stamping at all.

A simple colour combination of Pool Party and Pacific Point allow the Very Vanilla flower to really pop.

The ombre stencil effect is using a Sponge Dauber and one of the Pattern Party Decorative Masks. Pool Party to begin with, then Pacific Point for the darker areas.

Birthday Blues. Project designed by Karen Young at HIPPOFROG Designs

The Detailed Trio Punch creates those fabulous rounded corners. A strip of Pacific Point cardstock and a length of Pool Party Shimmer Ribbon separate the two sections.

Two shapes from the May Flowers Framelits dies are layered onto two circles, again in Pacific Point and Pool Party.

Birthday Blues. Project designed by Karen Young at HIPPOFROG Designs

The centre of the flower is a Faceted Gem in Clear that I’ve coloured with a Dark Pool Party Stampin’ Blend marker.

Keep an eye out for other projects in this design over the coming weeks.

Last Week’s Card & Cuppa – All about sponges

Instead of working with a particular stamp set at last week’s Card & Cuppa classes, I chose to focus on a set of tools instead. The tools were sponges.

Card & Cuppa project using sponges. Designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

The background uses one of the Decorative Masks and a Sponge Brayer to apply the colours. Here it’s Lovely Lipstick with Cajun Craze over the top. With the Sponge Brayer, there is a more even coverage of colour over a larger area.

Sponge Daubers and So Saffron are used to colour the stamped flower from the Falling Flowers Stamp Set. This combination is again used to soften the brick work by applying the colour in selected areas. Daubers are great for topical and more accurate application of colour in smaller areas.

For the leaves, the Stamping Sponges cut into sections have given us the variegated look.

By colouring a piece of cardstock with the sponges in Lemon Lime Twist and Granny Apple Green, it creates something rather messy. However, by selecting pieces of the section for the leaves, you can see they turn out really beautifully.

Stamping Sponges are more for random pieces as the colour can’t be controlled as much as Sponge Daubers and Brayers.

A strip of the fabulous Metallic-Edge Ribbon across the centre co-ordinates beautifully with the Gold Faceted Gem for a finishing touch of bling.

Last Week’s Card & Cuppa – Lift Me Up and Decorative Masks

Last week’s Card & Cuppa project was the final regular card of the year before we start on Christmas cards.

Stampin' Up with HIPPOFROG Designs - Lift me Up

There was a collective ‘ooooh’ when I revealed this card, a good sign!

The cloud Decorative Mask, White Inkpad and Sponge Dauber created the lovely subtle clouds onto the Marina Mist sky and the Dapper Denim strip. We then used the Lift me Up Stamp Set for some tone-on-tone stamping of the smaller balloons.

Next, a length of Whisper White Sheer Ribbon added more texture.  Finally, a bright red large hot-air balloon and a sentiment punched from Real Red Cardstock created a nice contrast to this masculine card.

For the next three weeks, we are making Christmas cards.  If you’d like to join us then make sure you book your place by 18:00 the day before.
