Birthday Blue and Grunge

It was the Birthday of one of my regular class attendees last week and the recipient loves blue and grunge.

Every time I design a project with a grunge element, they throw themselves in fully. Therefore, I knew that grunge just had to feature.

To begin with, the Artisan Textures Stamp Set and a range of blues are stamped onto Whisper White Cardstock. The blues are Balmy Blue, Pool Party, Pacific Point and Blueberry Bushel.

Next, the edge of the card has more ink added using a sponge dauber. Then, the piece of cardstock is scrunched and screwed up several times to soften the fibres and give it a creased look. More ink is added in the various blues to highlight the creases.

I then used an emery board randomly around the edges and across the stamping and accentuated these additional bits of distressing with more ink and sponge daubers. As I’m also a nail technician, I tend to have an emery board or two available!

It’s great when after lots of scrunching and distressing the fibres are so soft that they create tears and cause the layers to separate.

I also used an emery board around the edge of the Blueberry Bushel layer.

After mounting the layer and stamping onto a Thick Whisper White Cardstock base using Tear & Tape, it was time for the sentiment.

Using the Happy Birthday Thinlit I cut two, one in Blueberry Bushel and one in Whisper White. The Whisper White one was then inked in the various blues before being offset onto the blue one. It was then coated in Wink of Stella for a touch of sparkle. Dimensionals cut into smaller pieces attach the sentiment to the project.

Finally, Rhinestones add some extra bling and sparkle.

Hopefully, you can the Wink of Stella and ripping in a bit more detail in the picture below.

Both my new Gallery Grunge Stamp Set and Merry Merlot inkpad were waiting be used, so this was the perfect project.

The background came to life as I was stamping. There is an image in the set that has lots of lines so I’ve stamped this multiple times along the left-hand edge of the card.

I’ve die-cut the sentiment twice and used a sponge dauber to add splashes of colour. By offsetting the sentiments it also creates a slight shadow to add more depth.

More sponge dauber action around the edge of the project adds to the grunge effect.

Finally, I’ve used Dimensionals cut into thin pieces to attach the sentiment to create even more depth.

This is a great design to recreate using a different colour or sentiment. With 50 main colours to choose from there are a lot of options.

Which colour, stamp set and sentiment would you use?

Marquetry meets Paper Piecing

Yesterday was my Father-in-Law’s Birthday and I hit a block with what card to make for him.

I knew I wanted to use the Happy Birthday Thinlit and the Wood Textures DSP Stack, but that is as far as my creativity got.

Then, my Husband and I had a lightbulb moment as my Father-in-Law used to create wood marquetry.  So, I decided to make my own using a papercrafting method, paper piecing.

Here is the stamp free project:

Stampin' Up! Happy Birthday Thinlit

I cut Happy Birthday sentiments from two pieces of DSP and then switched the pieces over.  My Fine-Tip Glue Pen was the glue of choice for this as it sticks the tiniest of parts.  It was like a jigsaw puzzle to put together and took a while as I had to make sure I put everything in the correct place.

Using a third piece of DSP, I created an outline that butted up to the central piece.  I then finished the corners with the darker piece again.

This design would look lovely replicated in any two contrasting colours.

In Color Happy Birthday

This is the final project from the recent In Color Introduction Class.

It’s a stamp-free card with a combination of all of the In Color 2017-19 colours and the fabulous new Happy Birthday Thinlit.

We firstly cut the sentiment from a piece of Very Vanilla 10cm wide and put the ‘Happy Birthday’ to one side.

Then we added 2cm wide strips of In Color Cardstock onto the Very Vanilla piece.  My top tip is to start with the middle strip using grid paper to line it up and then add the other strips either side.

Next we added a length of Very Vanilla Baker’s Twine and tied it in a bow before attaching the coloured section to a Thick Very Vanilla Cardstock base using Dimensionals.

The finishing touch was attaching the sentiment using the Fine-Tip Glue Pen.

This card is really quick and easy to make and is perfect for both males and females.  You could create a different look by changing the base card, senitment and twine to Basic Black or Whisper White.  Another option is to add bling to the finished project for a touch of sparkle.

I know of at least two happy receipients of these cards that were made during the class.

You can see all of the projects from the class on my Papercrafting Class Pinterest Board.
