Last Week’s Card & Cuppa – Easter Punch Art

At last week’s Card & Cuppa sessions, the attendees made these cute Easter Punch Art projects.

Easter Punch Art project using Stampin' Up! products. Designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

The rabbit uses the Bunny Builder Punch, and the eggs are from the Balloon Bouquet Punch, with the ‘tie’ cut off.

To create the grass, we used a texture from the Touches of Texture Stamp Set and stamped in Pear Pizzazz. This was a combination of lots of generations of stamping, along with turning the stamp to create the effect.

The bunny and its cute tail have the edges softened using a Sponge Dauber.

My inspiration for the eggs was of course mini eggs. Each one is stamped tone on tone using a different pattern.

We have Soft Sea Foam ‘splats’ from the Swirly Bird Stamp Set, So Saffron stripes from the Playful Backgrounds Stamp Set and Jar of Love provides the Blushing Bride dots.

These are all mounted on the Soft Sea Foam base and So Saffron layer. Finally, the bunny is added using Dimensionals.

Card & Cuppa has a slightly amended schedule for the next month due to Bank Holidays etc. Please refer to my Class Timetable for more details and remember to book your place by 18:00 the day before.

Botanical Butterfly DSP

This quick and easy card using the SAB Botanical Butterfly DSP was a project at my recent Stamp-a-Stack Class.

SAB Botanical Butterfly DSP. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

I love the monochrome effect with the splash of colour from the punched butterfly. A touch of shimmer comes from the Black/Silver Striped Metallic Ribbon from the Spring/Summer Catalogue.

The sentiment is from the Jar of Love Stamp Set and we used Memento Tuxedo Black.

SAB Botanical Butterfly DSP. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

A base card in Thick Whisper White and a Basic Black layer co-ordinates with the DSP.

The coloured butterfly is from another sheet of DSP in the pack and is punched with the Butterfly Duet Punch.

It’s attached to the card using a Dimensional to make it fly off the page.

SAB Botanical Butterfly DSP. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

Instead of using the Thick Cardstock to create bases, you could use Notecards to make the DSP go further. I could see it making a batch of ‘Thank You’ cards or different sentiments to give as a gift. The possibilities are endless.

Why not join us for a future Stamp-a-Stack Class. Head to my Class Timetable for more details and to book your place.

Last Week’s Card & Cuppa – Love Cats

As it’s Valentine’s Day this week, a love-themed card was the design for Card & Cuppa with these adorable love cats.

Love Cats. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

I’d seen various versions of this design on Pinterest (too many to find one person to credit) so made my own version.

Some tone-on-tone stamping using the Hardwood Stamp creates the fence. A few notches are cut by hand to make it a bit more realistic.

The sun/moon (it looks a little washed out in this picture) is made from a mask and sponge dauber

Love Cats. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

Using the Fox Builder Punch, the two cats are made from Basic Black and Gray Granite Cardstock. The Gray Granite cat is very lightly sponge daubered.

The tail and body are then added to the fence. Before the heads are added, whiskers are stamped in Memento Ink.

Love Cats. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

The finishing touches are a heart stamped in Real Red and coloured with Wink of Stella, plus a ‘love’ sentiment from Thoughtful Banners.

Perfect for Valentine’s Day or an Anniversary Card.

Last Week’s Card & Cuppa – Flowers and Dots

It was the first Card & Cuppa session after my holiday last week and the project was pink flowers and dots.

Flowers and Dots. Designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

I have made a similar project in the past but this has a different colour scheme and uses different flowers.

The colour combination is Petal Pink, Flirty Flamingo, Melon Mambo and Berry Burst with Very Vanilla.

Two set of background dots from the Daisy Delight Stamp Set and Jar of Love Stamp Set are randomly stamped across the Very Vanilla Cardstock.

Then, flowers from Happy Birthday Gorgeous Stamp Set and again Jar of Love are added to some of the dots.Flowers and Dots. Designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

As there are lots of circles on the project, the Detailed Trio Punch creates the rounded corners that mirror them.

The sentiment is again from Jar of Love but is mounted onto several layers of circles. Behind the layers are a piece of co-ordinating Very Vanilla Polka Dot Tulle Ribbon and Baker’s Twine. Although you can’t see the Tulle Ribbon, or it’s subtle shimmer very well in the picture, I promise you it is there!

Flowers and Dots. Designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

Finally, a few Pearls in the centre of some of the flowers add another touch of shimmer.

As you know, I love to create a design and then make it in different colour ways. It’s a way of getting a lot more use from the original design and can create a totally different look. Which colour combination would you choose?

Last Week’s Card & Cuppa – Jar of Love meets Bunny Builder Punch

Last week’s Card & Cuppa project was Jar of Love meets Bunny Builder Punch. Due to the Bank Holiday, there was only one Card & Cuppa session.

Jar of Love meets Bunny Builder Punch. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

The jar from Jar of Love is stamped twice, once on the main card and once on a separate piece of cardstock.

2nd generation stamping of Pool Party adds the water to the bottom, along with several stems, before cutting the jar out.

On the main card, it’s time to stamp the stems that will show above the jar. It’s part of the project that is a bit of smoke and mirrors – if you can’t see it, it isn’t there!

The separate jar overlays the base jar to cover the other stems. A fun Gray Granite bee with Wink of Stella wings creates a buzz by the leaves.

Next, it’s the turn of the flowers. On a separate piece of cardstock, Watercolor Pencils and imagination create a bespoke block of colour for the flowers. Blender Pens then soften the lines from the colouring. It’s personal choice as to the colour or effect of the flowers.

The Bunny Builder Punch then comes into play as the tail from the punch are perfect for creating flowers. Using the Blossom Builder Punch, you can make smaller flowers in a different colour too.

Every flower is given a Rhinestone centre and a Glue Dot back, for attaching to the project. More smoke and mirrors hides the double stamping of the stems by ensuring a few flowers cover the top of the jar.

Jar of Love meets Bunny Builder Punch. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

Once again, for the layer for back of the sentiment, a piece of cardstock has the personal colour touch from Watercolor Pencils. This can match the flowers or be completely different as it’s a personal choice. The Duet Banner Punch creates the banner shape from the bespoke colouring.

Thoughtful Banners creates the outline for the ‘For You’ sentiment.

Due to the bespoke nature of the colouring, no two projects are the same with this design.

Lovely As a Tree – All about the grunge

The penultimate project from my recent Lovely As a Tree Class is all about the grunge.

Lovely as a Tree grunge. Designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

This uses sponge daubers for most of the inking, including colouring the tree in two colours for a natural look.

For the grunge look, screw up a piece of Whisper White Cardstock into a ball several times to create the creases. The more times the scrunching happens, the softer the fibres become and the better the overall effect.

Starting with the lightest colour of ink and a Sponge Dauber, begin by highlighting some of the creases. Then, add the darker colours to build up the layers of creases. As with my other grunge projects, a nail file is used to crack the top of the fibres around the edge to create more texture. Again, use Sponge Daubers to add more ink and highlight these areas further.

The colours for the grunge inking are Crumb Cake and Old Olive, with Early Espresso for the darker areas.

Lovely as a Tree grunge. Designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

Lots of times people really overthink how to create a grunge piece. My advice is to just go with the flow and it will create itself. Just remember to leave a bit of white space.

I also know that some people have a problem creating projects like this, but it’s great to learn new techniques. Plus, it’s good to step outside of your comfort zone and learn a new skill. Even if you don’t like the design, always remember that you’re not sending it to yourself! Try and think about someone who you can send it to when you are creating to overcome any reservations.

Lovely as a Tree grunge. Designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

As the grunge layer is not a flat piece, it is stuck to the project using a few strips of Tear & Tape. At the bottom of my project, you can see that I’m showing the creases and texture instead of working against them.

For the layers, I chose Tranquil Tide as a contrast, along with a base card made from Thick Whisper White. This helps to pull everything together.

Finally, a sentiment from the Jar of Love Stamp Set and a strip of Metallic-Edged Ribbon are attached using Tear & Tape.

Last Week’s Card & Cuppa – Inspired by roses

Last week’s Card & Cuppa project was inspired by roses.

Card & Cuppa project using Petal Palette. Designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

I have a beautiful rose bush in my front garden that blooms throughout the summer and this year is no exception. In fact the blooms are so pretty that I just had to take a picture.

Roses in garden that inspired Card & Cuppa project

So, when I was thinking about a project for the class, these flowers were my inspiration.

Petal Palette is the stamp set I chose as it has the lovely roses. The crumb cake background dulls the colouring but I like the more muted tones on this project. Even though my roses are a bright red!

All of the stamping is in Early Espresso and the roses are coloured with Watercolor Pencils (yes, I know the ‘u’ is missing, but that is their name in the catalogue as it’s American spelling!) A Blender Pen is used to soften the colouring.

For contrast, a strip of the fabulous new Polka Dot Ribbon is used down the edge before a layered sentiment is added.

Card & Cuppa project using Petal Palette. Designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

The ribbon is great for adding some texture as it’s really tactile. To add more depth, the sentiment is raised up on Dimensionals.

Card & Cuppa project using Petal Palette. Designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

Finally, Wink of Stella is added to the petals to add a subtle touch of bling.

It’s great to be able to take inspiration from the world around us. What has inspired you to create something?

‘In Color’ Introduction – Shades of Lovely Lipstick

Today I’m sharing another project from my recent In Color Introduction Class. This time it’s shades of Lovely Lipstick.

Shades of Lovely Lipstick Card. Designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

Blackberry Bliss and Pear Pizzazz work really well with the new Lovely Lipstick to make a fabulous colour combination .

A Sponge Brayer and some strips of card for masking creates the shades of Lovely Lipstick effect. I love how you can make ombre effect as subtle or expressive as you want to.

The leaves and flowers from Swirly Bird are stamped multiple times to create different colour shades with a sentiment from Jar of Love.

As with this project, the Pretty Label shape is punched twice, once for the sentiment, and again to create a layer by chopping it in half. The strip of co-ordinating ribbon neatly hides the join.

Due to the round shapes on this project, the new Details Trio Punch just had to be used to round the corners.

Shades of Lovely Lipstick Card. Designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

Once the flowers are punched and leaves are fussy cut, they are stuck onto the sentiment. This is then finally attached to the project using Dimensionals.

Shades of Lovely Lipstick Card. Designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

This project can be easily replicated in lots of different colours with different sentiments too.

Narrow Notecards in Blueberry Bushel

Have you missed the Narrow Notecards in the Annual Catalogue? These fabulous little things are so easy to use and are great for brightening someone’s day.

Narrow Notecards from Stampin' Up! Project designed by Karen Young at HIPPOFROG Designs

It’s another monochrome project, this time in Blueberry Bushel and these notecards at just 4.5 by 2.5 inches are perfect for this effect.

I’ve used the In Color 6×6 DSP as the background mounted onto a co-ordinating piece of cardstock. There is also a sentiment, ribbon and layer in Blueberry Bushel too.

Due to their size, they are great a being economical with DSP as you only need to use small strips. The 2″ Circle punch creates a fabulous co-ordinating envelope flap liner.
