A Box of Birthday Balloons

For my Niece’s recent lockdown 18th, I made this box of birthday balloons.

A Box of Birthday Balloons. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

I haven’t made a pop-up box for a while, so I thought it was the perfect occasion.

These lay flat for postage with the box flaps up, then, when the recipient opens it, the flaps fall down and the box takes shape.

My colour combination is from the dotty Playing With Patterns DSP I have used. It’s Calypso Coral, Coastal Cabana, Crushed Curry, Purple Posy and Whisper White.

Coastal Cabana is the main colour for the box. Using the Detailed Trio Punch, I rounded the corners of the box and the DSP.

The balloons, cut using the Balloon Bouquet Punch are embossed. Tasteful Textile and Wrapped in Texture Embossing Folders create the fun patterns.

Attaching the balloons to the strings I made from the Hippo & Friends Dies was made easier by sandwiching them between the embossed ballon and a plain balloon shape.

This also means that when it lays flat, the balloons don’t stick to each other.

I popped three strips across the inside of the box. This not only gave me something to attach the ballons too, but provided some extra rigidity.

As I attached the balloons to the strips, I was carefully checking they wouldn’t foul each other, or overhang the edge too far when folded.

Once I was happy with the positions, I sandwiched the bottom of the strings in with another piece of Coastal Cabana Cardstock.

There had to be an ’18’, so using Silver Foil Sheets, this and the sentiment were cut out. Playful Alphabet Dies for the ’18’ and Well Written Dies for the sentiment.

Finally, a length of matching Playing With Patterns Combo Ribbon is stuck around the box, along with some Playing With Patterns Resin Dots.

I also made an envelope too, but didn’t take a picture of that!

Last Week’s Card & (Your) Cuppa – Autumn Punch Pack

For last week’s Card & (Your) Cuppa project, the Autumn Punch Pack was the star.

Autumn Punch Pack. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

I thought an autumnal project would be appropriate, especially as the nights are starting to draw in.

My colour combination starts with Crushed Curry for the strip, plus Cinnamon Cider, Pumpkin Pie and Cajun Craze. These all combine with the Very Vanilla layer and basecard.

The DSP strip is from the Playing with Patterns 6×6 DSP Pack, one of the packs currently on Special Offer during October.

Using the Autumn Punch Pack a variety of leaves are cut out and stuck onto the DSP strip.

This trio of small punches is a great way to add lots of shapes very quickly.

Autumn Punch Pack. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

Before sticking the DSP strip down, any overhanging edges of leaves are trimmed away, leaving straight edges. It’s similar to this project.

Then, a length of co-ordinating Cinnamon Cider Ribbon is stuck in a cross shape. Using Dimensionals the sentiment from the Itty Bitty Birthdays Stamp Set is placed over the top.

Fabulous Florals on World Cardmaking Day

Happy World Cardmaking Day.

Today I’m sharing another project from my Fabulous Florals Class. This is a quick and easy project to make on World Cardmaking Day.Fabulous Florals on World Cardmaking Day. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

As it’s a monochrome project, it is easy to replicate in your own colours. You can also use any punch shape you have to hand.

My colours are Coastal Cabana and Whisper White. I chose Coastal Cabana as it co-ordinates with the strip of Playing with Patterns DSP across the card.

This DSP pack is one of the packs in the current 15% off DSP Sale running throughout October.Fabulous Florals on World Cardmaking Day. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

Medium Daisy Punch shapes are stuck onto the DSP strip, with any overhanging pieces cut off and stuck into the gaps.

The DSP strip is then stuck onto the Whisper White layer.

A cross of co-ordinating ribbon from the Playing with Patterns Ribbon Combo Pack is topped with a sentiment from the Itty Bitty Birthdays Stamp Set in Coastal Cabana ink.

Finally, some Artistry Blooms Sequins, again in Coastal Cabana, are scattered across the project.

Look out for some more designs I’ll be making using this layout.

I’d love to see your World Cardmaking Day projects. What have you made?

Fabulous Florals – A Purple Posy Project

The third card from my recent Fabulous Florals Class is this pretty Purple Posy project.

Purple Posy Project. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

Purple Posy is my main colour, with some Soft Sea Foam leaves.

A piece of the Playing with Patterns 6×6 DSP in Purple Posy is cut into 1 inch squares and placed in a square pattern. This is one of the select DSP packs that is part of October’s 15% off DSP sale – starts tomorrow.

Co-ordinating Purple Posy Ribbon from the Playing with Patterns Ribbon Combo Pack is added. Note how I’ve created more interest by using the stripes in the opposite direction to the stripes on the DSP.

A sentiment from the Itty Bitty Birthdays Stamp Set is inked using the Purple Posy Stampin’ Write Marker.

Purple Posy Project. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

Using the Perennial Flower Punch, two Purple Posy shapes are cut, and then scrunched to make the flower.

The Soft Sea Foam leaves, from the Tulip Builder Punch are also scrunched, before being added to the back of the flower.

Tear & Tape is used to attach the flower to the project as it needs a stronger adhesive due to the scrunching and layers. You could also use Stampin’ SEAL+ for this.Purple Posy Project. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG DesignsFinally, three Rhinestones add some bling to the centre of the flower.

The various layers under the flower, with the Rhinestones on top, make this quick a thick project. Make sure you double check is you need to use a large stamp before posting this Purple Posy project.

Last Week’s Card & (Your) Cuppa – Pop-up Banner

This pop-up banner card for last week’s Card & (Your) Cuppa Class project is probably the most complicated I’ve taught the attendees so far. As I also like a challenge, I decided to use it as the Card & (Your) Cuppa for Children project too!

Pop-up Banner. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

It begins life as a Coastal Cabana easel card base, with a fold in the centre, plus a fold across the front too.

Two goalpost pieces are added to the bottom half of the fold. These are long strips with a fold in the middle that are glued in an open position. They are folded at the very end as they sandwich everything together.

Pop-up Banner. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

On the lower section, three flags are attached to a piece of the twine from the Flowers for Every Season Ribbon Combo Pack. The twine has three strands in Whisper White, Misty Moonlight and a metallic piece. All three pieces are used on this project.

My flags are made from strips of the Playing with Patterns DSP. I only used three strips for the whole project. Each end of the strips are cut with the new Banners Pick a Punch before they are cut into 4.

As each piece is folded, the shape is cut by hand onto the non-punched ends. This is because they are too short to fit in the punch.

When attaching the flags to the twine, make sure you only glue the DSP and avoid the twine. You want to be able to move the flags into position and can’t do this if they are stuck to the twine.

A piece of Tear & Tape secures the ends of the twine to the goalpost piece. Overhang the ends as you can cut these off later.

Pop-up Banner. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

For the top section, 7 flags are attached to the other section piece of twine.  These are then tied onto the goalpost sections. At this point the goalposts can be folded in half and glued to the bottom section to sandwich everything together.

To stop the top section swinging backwards behind the goalposts, I put a small amount of glue on the outside flags to attach them to the goalposts.

My birthday sentiment is from the Itty Bitty Birthdays Stamp Set, again with a punched end. This sits on top of the metallic piece of twine and hides the bottom string.

You can now cut off any overhanging pieces of twine from the edge. I decided to cut off the bottom pieces, but left the top.

Finally, a second sentiment, also from the Itty Bitty Birthdays Stamp Set and two sections of remaining flags are added to the base using Dimensionals. This is to ‘lock’ the pop-up banner in place for the receipient.

August Birthday Gatefold

This August Birthday Gatefold Card is one of the projects from last month’s Fancy Folds Class.

August Birthday Gatefold. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

I shared the crossover gatefold project with you recently, but wasn’t able to share this one until after my friend’s Birthday,

The Playing with Patterns 6×6 DSP pack gave me the perfect piece for the front panels, plus my colour inspiration. If you haven’t discovered the items from this fabulous Suite in the Annual Catalogue, then make sure you take a look.

My basecard is Purple Posy, with Calypso Coral for the other cardstock and ink.

A gatefold card is basically a card where the opening is in the middle, rather the side. My husband calls them barn door cards!

When making a gatefold card, it is always better to score the folds first, rather than just folding in half. This ensures you have a nice crisp and even fold.

Decide how wide you want your finished card to be and double it. This is the size of cardstock you need to cut. If your cardstock size when divided by 4 works out at something other than a whole or .5 of a cm, change your width to a number that can easily be divided. For example, my cards are normally 10.5cm wide, but for this design, I make them 10cm. Mainly because it is easier to divide 20 by 4, than 21.

You then need to score at your divided by 4 number (basically a 1/4 of the width) along one side. Then rotate your cardstock and make the same score on the other side. By rotating the cardstock, you are making the scorelines in the same place on both sides.

Fold along those score lines and your card should be ready to decorate.

August Birthday Gatefold. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designs

I’ve used the Many Mates Stamp Set here and coloured it using a Blender Pen.

As well as popping sentiment onto layers of circles, I’ve taken a length of the Purple Posy Ribbon from the Playing With Patterns Ribbon Combo Pack. This is stuck onto a piece of Purple Posy cardstock, looping the ends behind the sentiment.

Why not head to my Class Timetable for details of the classes I’m running this year.

Last Week’s Card & (Your) Cuppa – Pick a Vase

For last Week’s Card & (Your) Cuppa class project, the attendees had to pick a vase (or 12). It was more about vase arranging than flower arranging!

Pick a Vase. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designsa

Using the Playing With Patterns 6×6 DSP, every attendee had 12 vases shapes from the Vases Builder Punch. As each shape is double-sided, the biggest challenge was deciding where to place each one and the side of pattern to use. They could use any number of vases in any combination.

Taking my colour inspiration from the DSP, the base card is Crushed Curry with a Purple Posy layer. The flowers are a mix of Crushed Curry and Calypso Coral, with Coastal Cabana leaves.

This isn’t a colour combination I would have put together myself, so it’s great to try something new by using the DSP colours. You already know they are going to work together, so all you need to do is create a project using them.

Pick a Vase. Project designed by Karen at HIPPOFROG Designsa

A length of the co-ordinating Purple Posy Ribbon from Playing With Patterns Combo Pack sits down the side. Keep an eye out for this Combo Pack as some of the ribbons may be making an appearance in this week’s class.

The flowers are covered with Wink of Stella before adding them with a Glue Dot. Again, the flowers and leaves could be arranged in any vase, in any combination.

How many vases would be on your project, and how would you arrange them?
